Years keeping fish

A new aquarium going through the nitrogen cycle for beginners, with a water test kit

A new tank in the middle of cycling

Sound familiar?

Why new tanks go wrong

Most new tank problems happen before the tank has finished cycling. Here’s what that usually looks like.

Cloudy water in week one

A bacterial bloom is common in a new tank, and it’s a sign the cycle hasn’t finished yet.

Fish dying after a few days

Ammonia from fish waste builds up before the good bacteria are there to break it down.

Test results that make no sense

Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate rise and fall in a pattern. Once you know it, the numbers start to make sense.

Questions about the nitrogen cycle

I’m finishing it now. Check back on this page soon.

It’s the natural process where beneficial bacteria turn toxic ammonia from fish waste into nitrite, and then into much safer nitrate.

Usually around 4 to 8 weeks, depending on your tank, temperature and the method you use.
