Does Fluval FX6 come with media?

Does Fluval FX6 come with media

The Fluval FX6 has proven itself to be the power house canister filter in the industry for many consecutive years. If you’re lucky enough to own one, congratulations! But does Fluval FX6 come with media?

Media is included with the Fluval FX6. The FX6 comes with sponges (mechanical media), Fluval ceramic rings (biological media) and activated carbon (chemical media) as well as a carbon pad for your bottom tray.

Is the media sufficient?

According to Fluval, the FX6 is capable of filtering up to 400 gallons. Assuming a 400 gallon tank has many fish, big fish, the bio-load in this tank will be tremendous. The amount of beneficial bacteria needed to convert toxic ammonia to the less toxic nitrate will be substantial.

The bio-media provided will not be sufficient in providing available surface area for beneficial bacteria. But the good news is the FX6 does have the capacity to house the amount of bio-media required. Once all the media included is used there will still be plenty of space for more media, the trays will not be filled to their max capacity.

This additional space for more media should be used as it will be necessary to properly filter a 400 gallon tank. Additionally, even if you don’t have a huge 400 gallon tank this additional space should house more media regardless. In other words, “get your moneys worth”. Can you use other media besides the included Fluval media?

All filter media is not made equally but can be used together. The Fluval FX6 allows you the option to use many variations of media in its multiple trays. It can even be beneficial to try different types of bio media as some may work better than others in your set up.

Some alternatives that can be used

Seachem Matrix

Seachem Matrix

Matrix is a highly porous media designed to provide exceptionally efficient bio filtration for single site removal of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate from freshwater, marine, and reef aquaria.

Each liter of matrix provides over 160,000 cm2 (170 sq. Ft.) of surface, equivalent to over 40 L (10 gallons) of typical plastic ball media.

Bio-Home Ultimate

bio-home ulitmate

Bio-home Aquarium filter media offers the best possible environment for bacterial colonization and is capable of supporting aerobic and anaerobic bacteria in a wide variety of filters and varied flow rates.

Being capable of supporting the aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, it ensures that natural processing of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate can be achieved.

Seachem Purigen

Seachem Purigen

Purigen is a premium synthetic adsorbent that is unlike any other filtration product. It is not a mixture of ion exchangers or adsorbents, but a unique macro-porous synthetic polymer that removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all others by over 500%.

Purigen controls ammonia, nitrites and nitrates by removing nitrogenous organic waste that would otherwise release these harmful compounds. Purigen’s impact on trace elements is minimal. It significantly raises redox. It polishes water to unparalleled clarity.
